General description: The Illinois Law Enforcement Officer-Worn Body Camera Act was effective January 1, 2016. It was amended by the SAFE-T Act of 2021, which requires all Illinois LE agencies to implement a body-worn camera program, depending on agency type and size, no later than January 1, 2025. Only about 10 percent of Illinois agencies have implemented body cameras so far. To help prepare all agencies for the new law, this training will provide you the collective experience of agencies in northern, central, and southeastern Illinois that have been using the cameras. You will learn what’s in the law, but more important, you will learn how you can best plan for and implement a successful body-worn camera program. The session will address policies, practices, and lessons learned from these agencies. You will learn about interaction with state’s attorneys’ offices and how the use of cameras can assist with citizen complaints. Who should attend? Chiefs and command staff who oversee or plan to oversee a BWC program. It will helpful for agencies already using cameras and the other 90 percent that are looking into it.
